Congregation Mikveh Israel (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) traces its history to September 25, 1740 when the Province of Pennsylvania and Thomas Penn authorized a permanent burial ground for the entire Jewish community of Philadelphia. Friends' Central School was founded in Philadelphia as a Quaker secondary school by a joint committee of three Hicksite monthly meetings. It was first located at 4th and Cherry Streets. The Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia held at Spruce Street was established in 1833 by Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting (Hicksite) out of the Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia.
